How does Dry Needling work?

You get a darting pain, if this reoccurs or if you are in trauma, the pain signal may return through the Sympathetic Ganglion and activate Primany Afferent Nocioceptors (H) which will feedback to the spinal cord. This will cause pain to continue instead of fade. It's called a Reflex Arc. At the same time motor neurones may become stuck in a feedback loop/reflex arc, facilitating muscle spasm. In some cases the reflex arc continues for years, even decades. Introducing a new stimulus (i.e. the needle) impedes the reflex arc and has the effect of relaxing the muscle. Dry Needling stops this cycle.

What does Dry Needling feel like?

Most people’s experience of needles is of those used in injections and blood tests. Acupuncture needles which are used in dry needling bear little resemblance to hypodermic needles. They are much finer and are solid rather than hollow. When the needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache.
